چکیده

Conditionals play a prominent role in human reasoning and, hence, all cognitive theories try to evaluate conditionals like humans do. In this paper, we are particularly interested in theWeak Completion Semantics, a new cognitive theory based on logic programming, the weak completion of a program, the three-valued Łukasiewicz logic, and abduction. We show that the evaluation of conditionals within theWeak Completion Semantics as defined so far leads to counterintuitive results. We propose to distinguish between obligation and factual conditionals with necessary or sufficient conditions, and adapt the set of abducibles accordingly. This does not only remove the previously encountered counterintuitive results, but also leads to a new model for the Wason Selection Task.

From Logic Programming to Human Reasoning: How to be Artificially Human

Results of psychological experiments have shown that humans make assumptions, which are not necessarily valid, that they are influenced by their background knowledge and that they reason non-monotonically. These observations show that classical logic does not seem to be adequate for modeling human reasoning. Instead of assuming that humans do not reason logically at all, we take the view that h...

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

Paraphrases of Counterfactual and Causal Conditionals

Introduction Counterfactual conditionals seem to be understood differently from factual conditionals. People may understand a factual conditional, e.g., ‘if Joe cut his finger it bled’ by initially envisaging just one true possibility, ‘Joe cut his finger and it bled’ (Johnson-Laird & Byrne, 1991; 2002). Counterfactual conditionals are different. People understand a counterfactual, e.g., ‘if Jo...

Weak Completion Semantics and its Applications in Human Reasoning

I present a logic programming approach based on the weak completions semantics to model human reasoning tasks, and apply the approach to model the suppression task, the selection task as well as the belief-bias e↵ect, to compute preferred mental models of spatial reasoning tasks and to evaluate indicative as well as counterfactual conditionals.

A New Interpretation of the Semantics of "Moral Obligation" from Allame Tabatabaie's Viewpoint

The most important part in analyzing moral concepts includes those used as predicate in moral sentences covering moral concepts of valuation and obligation. Moral concepts in the field of values include those like “good” and “bad” while obligatory concepts include “ought to” and “ought no” and “duty”. Many papers have been written about “moral obligation”; however, dissociating the area of sema...
